History
Church
World Service (CWS) was born in the aftermath of World War II. A number of
denominations came together to form an agency "to do in partnership what
none of us could hope to do as well alone." The mission: Feed the hungry,
clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless.
More
than fifty years later the mission remains, though where and how they
accomplished it has changed dramatically. In 1946-47, U.S. churches opened their
hearts and provided more than 11 million pounds of food, clothing, and medical
supplies to war-torn Europe. Protestants and Catholics pooled talent and
resources to meet a staggering refugee crisis. Today the Immigration and Refugee
Program of Church World Service is a vital, internationally-lauded ministry,
having resettled some 400,000 people since its inception.
Basic
Beliefs
Church
World Service’s goal is to support the most vulnerable persons and communities
affected by social, economic, and political oppression in their efforts to
develop socially-, economically-, and environmentally-sustainable communities
and achieve a higher quality of life. CWS believes in order to be genuinely
fruitful, programs and projects must come from the people themselves — not
imposed by others. Through Church World Service, members of
congregations in the USA come together with the ecumenical family worldwide to
witness to and share Christ's love with all people.
Church World
Service achieves its mission by:
- Sharing and
receiving the Gospel;
- Providing opportunities
to work together worldwide
- Meeting basic needs
of people;
- Advocating for
justice, human rights and the dignity of all;
- Educating for peace
and reconciliation;
- Promoting the integrity
of the environment

Facts
Supporting sustainable self-help development, Church
World Service is curing malnutrition in West Africa by planting Moringa trees.
Locals are now provided with nutrition in a source that was indigenous to that
area, but was in short supply. CWS also meets emergency needs by providing the
New Jersey interfaith with a $30,000 grant for organizing and assistance for
immediate needs in response to the September 11th tragedy. They are
also hard at work aiding refugees with The Church World Service Immigration and
Refugee Program (CWS/IRP). This is a network of denominations and local
affiliate offices serving the needs of refugees as they resettle in the U.S.
