Basic History
This organization is a grassroots ecumenical movement of Christian women,
centered around prayer, Bible study, advocacy and action.
Church Women United began in 1941 during the
time of World War II. The organization held a common belief that there were
better ways to solve conflict than by killing people. That ideal of commitment
to human rights and justice through support of the United Nations remains
central to the organization today.
Basic Beliefs
CWU brings Christian women together for spiritual nourishment and faith based
advocacy. A broad spectrum of community ministries is engaged at the local unit
level including prison ministries, food pantries, tutoring and childcare, and
job skills training.
Church Women United provides, through
ecumenical worship or Bible study, an outlet for common cause and fellowship for
action projects, demonstrations on justice issues or possibly taking legislative
action. Their main vision is to find new ways to draw women to involvement in
the welfare of women and children without exacting a long-term institutional
commitment.
