The Movie Mom
The Movie Mom

www.moviemom.com
Basic History
This Website, on-line since 1995, is based on the work of Nell Minow (the Movie
Mom) a lawyer, mother and former film student. The Web site generated a book,
which was published in 1999: The Movie Mom's Guide to Family Movies. This
Website is the continuation of that work and features reviews of current
releases, classic videos, and guidance for parents. Ms. Minow served on the
board of WETA (educational television and radio in Washington, DC) for 12 years
and now serves on the board of Reading is Fundamental. She is also co-author of
three books written on corporate governance to improve the way corporations do
business.
Basic Beliefs
The Moviemom.com encourages movies that help children to think, feel and
question, and to share those thoughts and feelings with their parents. The site
also includes guidelines for family viewing, and recommendations on the best
movies for parents about parenting.
Leadership
Nell Minow is the only reviewer (though she occasionally invites her
teenagers to contribute their thoughts). Her articles have appeared
in USA Today, among other publications. Her book, The Movie Mom's Guide
to Family Movies was published by Avon in 1999. It is now in its fourth
printing.
Basic Facts
This site uses a rating system (one to five "check marks,") in
reviewing movies available on video and in release in theatres. It aims to be a
guide to promote movies that offer more than explosions, casual sex, and racial
and gender stereotypes. It endeavors to recommend movies "that exercise the
mind and spirit and bring the whole family closer together."
