Basic History
The Council was formed in 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio by representatives of the member churches and by the merger of 12 previously existing ecumenical agencies. The roots of some of those agencies go back to the 19th century.

Basic Activities
Working together in the Council, member communions seek to nurture Christian unity and promote interfaith understanding, work toward peace and justice, and serve people throughout the world. The NCC has adopted priorities in the areas of Faith, Justice, and Education for action in the United States. Church World Service (CWS) is the international service and witness ministry of the Council. With denominational and ecumenical partners in more than 80 countries, CWS supports refugee assistance, disaster relief and community development.

Basic Beliefs
The NCC is made up of 36 member "communions" or denominations. Through the NCC, members join with partners in more than 80 countries, including the United States, in ministries of disaster relief, development and refugee assistance; unity/ justice, education, and public witness. Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican Church bodies work together on these ministries to promote peace, justice and serve people throughout the world.
