Brief History
A parish of the Episcopal church of the U.S.A., Trinity has always been an
active, influential community of faith. It advocated religious education for
slaves and drew them into the life of the church, established missions and
social programs for immigrants during the 19th century, and set up soup kitchens
and hostels during the Depression. Today, Trinity continues to direct its efforts
toward the spiritual and physical need of its parishioners, the neighboring Wall
street community and the world at large.
Trinity's identity is as complex as that of New
York City itself. One of downtown Manhattan's most popular tourist attractions,
the church structure is a venerable landmark. But Trinity is not a museum. It is
a vital, energetic Episcopal parish, drawing its membership of approximately 700
from all five boroughs. Trinity is also one of New York's most active, and perhaps
oldest, philanthropic organizations, funding projects from the South Bronx to
South Africa. Its outreach to city residents today includes a homeless shelter,
a 24-hour center for the mentally ill homeless, a home for the elderly and
disabled, and a music program that brings concerts to residents of long-term care
and treatment facilities.
Trinity Church is also one of the largest commercial
realtors in the city, with 27 buildings totaling approximately 6 million square
feet of office, retail and manufacturing space. Income from these properties is
earmarked for philanthropic purposes.
On Ascension Day (May 16) 1996, The Parish of
Trinity Church, Wall Street, launched a yearlong observation of its 300th
anniversary. During this tercentennial year, Trinity focused on, and rededicated
itself to , its rich tradition of worship, leadership, and community service.
