haven of date trees and historical sites, lies in ruins more than
two weeks after an earthquake struck on Dec. 26, leading to the
deaths of at least 30,000 people.

The death toll from the Dec. 26 earthquake in southeast Iran is
still expected to rise to as many as 40,000 persons; more than 25,000
