Basic History
Hartford Seminary, founded in 1834, specializes in professional and leadership development, research and continuing education.  It offers doctoral and master's degrees and graduate and leadership certificates.  The activities of Hartford Seminary are designed to reach both leaders and scholars in faith communities and the general public.

Basic Beliefs
Hartford Seminary's influence reaches far beyond the walls of churches, masjids and synagogues.  Its work strentthens the moral character of all society. By developing the leadership capacities of clergy and the wider public, the Seminary directly affects the cities, towns and rural areas where these leaders live.  Armed with renewed vigor and dedication to their work, Hartford Seminary students and program participants return to their communities with a new wholeness, a new sense of the possibility of a human world, and the practial skills to bring about that vision.

Basic Facts
The expertise of its faculty, who number 14, includes:

  • Biblical studies
  • Liturgy, worship and spirituality
  • Theology and ethics
  • The study of congregational life
  • Islamic studies and Christian-Muslim relations

The Master of Arts offered by Hartford Seminary is oriented toward those seeking to explore how faith informs life in the home, the workplace, the public sector, and the congregation or faith community.  It helps students develop leadership skills and enhance their practice of ministry in daily life.

The Seminary's Graduate Certificate is an alternative degree available to those who want to grow spiritually and intellectually but are not interested in the full Master's program. Students may take just six courses to earn a graduate certificate.

The Doctor of Ministry degree offers professional and personal growth for leaders of faith communitites, from clergy to those who work in faith-based social service agencies.

The Seminary's Black and Hispanic Ministries Programs serve the urban community  by offering introductory theological education to religious and lay leaders.

The Women's Leadership Institute reflects its subtitle, A Program in Applied Spirituality, as it enables participants to develop and strengthen leadership skills.

Housed at the Seminary are two renowned centers:
The Hartford Institute for Religion Research is committed to providing research based information on the social scientific study of religion in a way that makes this research usable for religious leaders and the general public. Communication of the findings of its projects receives as much creative attention as does the gathering of the data. Hartford Institute projects have resulted in an impressive list of books in recent years, and an equally impressive list of news outlets where Institute findings and staff are quoted.

The Duncan Black MacDonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations is committed to the premise that through intensive study and academically guided dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation between Muslims and Christians can and must develop.
